Placement on no-fly list sans evidence illegal: IHC

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the authorities concerned to strictly adhere to the procedure for placing any citizen on the no-fly list, emphasising that citizens’ names should not be added to the list “arbitrarily”. Justice Babar Sattar declared that placement of a citizen’s name on the Passport Control List (PCL) without tangible evidence to be illegal and unconstitutional, ordering the immediate removal of the petitioner’s name from the list and restoring his right to travel freely. While deciding the petition of Nadir Mukhtiar recently, Justice Sattar found that the Directorate of Immigration and Passports had violated due process and fundamental rights by restricting the petitioner’s ability to travel abroad without proper legal justification. Sit-in will continue until our women reach home after being released: BNP’s Mengal

BNP-M President Sardar Akhtar Mengal said on Monday that his party’s sit-in demanding the release of arrested Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders will continue until “our women are released and reach their homes.” Mengal had announced a “long march” from Wadh to Quetta to protest the arrests of BYC chief organiser Dr Mahrang Baloch and other leaders as well as police crackdowns on a sit-in. HYDERABAD: For the fishermen of southern Sindh, it is a time to rejoice and catch the prized ‘palla’ fish. On the left bank of the gushing Indus, several boats line up downstream of the Kotri Barrage. On one of them, the elderly Suleman Mallah is busy cleaning his fishing net. He is preparing for the next day, when it will be his turn to take his boat out and hopefully net a few’palla’. “It is an arrangement we have worked out through mutual understanding. We don’t go into the river at the same time. We wait for our turn”, he tells Dawn . Suleman and other fishermen travel around 200ft to 250ft into the river to have a decent catch, which includes a variety of fish. “We are catching palla these days, although its number is not that encouraging,” the fisherman tells Dawn , lamenting how the species’ number has reduced considerably from the stories their elders used to tell them.
